The Vice-President of BAS Prof. Shterionov participates in a celebration of the Agricultural University

The Vice-President of BAS, Prof. DSc Shtelian D. Shterionov participated today in the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Faculty of Viticulture and Horticulture of the Agricultural University of Plovdiv and the ritual vine pruning on the occasion of Trifon Zarezan (Trifon the Pruner) holiday. The event was held at the university's training base in Brestnik. The rector, Assoc. Meeting of the President of BAS, Corr. Memb. Evelina Slavcheva with the Ambassador of Kazakhstan H.E. Viktor Temirbayev

The implementation of joint projects and initiatives between the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan were discussed at a meeting at the Academy by the President of BAS, Corr. Memb. Evelina Slavcheva and the Ambassador of the Republic of Kazakhstan to Bulgaria, H.E. Viktor Temirbayev. Among the topics of the discussion was research in the field of green energy. Corr. Memb. New Scientific Secretaries of BAS

  Scientific secretaries in seven of the nine research areas of BAS were elected by the General Assembly of the Academy at a meeting held on 10 February. According to the Statutes of BAS, the Scientific Secretaries have a term of four years and are part of the leadership team of the President of the Academy. In the Information and Communication Sciences and Technologies division, Prof. Ivan Georgiev from the Institute of Information and Communication Technologies will serve a second term as the Scientific Secretary. National discussion “SOS for cultural heritage”

A national discussion "SOS for Cultural Heritage" with the participation of scientists from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences was held today in Sofia. The forum was organized by the Cultural Heritage Society - the Bulgarian representative of the largest European organization for the preservation of cultural heritage "Europa Nostra" and the "Standard" media. Bulgarian scientists develop antibacterial surfaces for repairing damaged bone tissue

Antibacterial surfaces with applications in repairing damaged bone tissue are being developed by scientists at the Institute of Electronics of BAS. The research has used ultrashort-pulse lasers to enhance the antibacterial properties of ceramic and polymer materials compatible with human tissue. The results of laboratory studies show the influence of laser radiation on the cellular composition of surfaces which is essential for the efficient repair of damaged tissues. The antimicrobial properties of laser-treated surfaces have been evaluated in interaction with different bacterial strains. Studies have shown that bacterial cells are less easily retained on the treated materials and their viability is reduced.
