World Water Day 22 March and World Meteorological Day 23 March

  The World Water Day on March 22 and the World Meteorological Day on March 23 were celebrated by representatives of academia, government institutions, business and education at the “Prof. Marin Drinov” Hall of BAS. The celebration is an initiative of the Climate, Atmosphere and Water Research Institute of BAS (CAWRI-BAS), the Bulgarian Water Association (BWA) and with the support of the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works (MRDPW). The Assembly of Academicians of BAS elected foreign member of BAS and associate members of AACM

The Assembly of Academicians of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences elected as a foreign member of BAS Prof. Konstantinos Georgiou Nihoritis from Greece. He is a distinguished Greek Old Bulgarian scholar and theologian with numerous publications on Bulgarian cultural history and its links with Athos. He is a graduate of the Athonias Ecclesiastical Academy (1976) and the Sofia Theological Academy (1981). He is currently a professor at the Faculty of Slavonic, Balkan and Oriental Studies at the Macedonian University of Thessaloniki. More information about Prof. Nihoritis can be seen here. Neurotechnology research project launched

A new experimental laboratory at the Institute of Information and Communication Technologies of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (IICT) will be established under the "VIBraTE" project, funded by the Horizon Europe programme. This was announced by Assoc. Prof. Dimiter Prodanov who presented the planned activities of the project and gave a lecture at BAS on the perspectives of neurotechnologies. The "VIBraTE" project has started in February 2023 and will last until 31 January 2028. The Director of IICT Corr. Mem. Svetozar Margenov, who opened the event, specified that so far in Bulgaria such an innovative project had not been implemented. Assoc. 76 years “Stephan Angeloff” Institute of Microbiology

The 76th anniversary of the founding of the "Stephan Angeloff" Institute of Microbiology of BAS was celebrated on March 7 with a solemn assembly and a scientific session. Special guests were Dr. Rebecca Grace, Executive Director of the Pasteur Network and Mr. Arnaud Bauberot, Attaché for Scientific and University Cooperation at the French Embassy in Bulgaria. The director of the institute Prof. Penka Petrova opened the event and presented a plaquette to Dr. Rebecca Grace for her dedication and commitment to the collaboration with the Pasteur Network. Visit of the Ambassador of Switzerland H.E. Raymund Furrer to BAS

The President of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences Prof. Julian Revalski, Full Member of BAS, met with the Ambassador of Switzerland H.E. Raimund Furrer. The Deputy Head of mission Mr. Rolf Ott also participated in the talks. The President of BAS informed the Swiss guests in detail about the history, structure, way of work, achievements and scientific priorities of the Academy at national and international level. The Ambassador in his turn introduced Prof. Revalski with the current state of scientific and educational institutions in Switzerland and shared future opportunities in which scientists and PhD students from BAS could participate. Corresponding member Alek Popov was awarded the National Prize for Humour and Satire “Rayko Alexiev”

At an official ceremony in “Stanislav Dospevski” Art Gallery in Pazardzhik, the "Rayko Alexiev" National Prize for Humour and Satire and the prizes in the accompanying competition for local authors were awarded. This year's winner is the writer Corr. Mem. Alek Popov.
