BAS and BNR with a new initiative for science

The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and the Bulgarian National Radio will cooperate and implement joint initiatives for the development of science in society. This is stated in the Memorandum signed today at the Academy by the President of BAS Prof. Julian Revalski, Member of BAS, and the Director General of BNR Milen Mitev. The President of BAS thanked that BNR often gives scientists the opportunity to present their work on its programmes and noted that he hoped this would continue and be further developed with new ideas. HAPPY 90TH ANNIVERSARY OF ACADEMICIAN VASSIL KAZANDJIEV!

Acad. VASSIL KAZANDJIEV is among the brightest names that have established themselves as contemporary classics in Bulgarian music. He graduated from the Music Academy in Sofia (1957), studied composition in the class of Prof. Pancho Vladigerov and conducting under Prof. Vladi Simeonov. In 1957, while still a student at the Academy, he won the laureate title for his Symphonietta for large orchestra at the Sixth International Youth Festival in Moscow, Dmitri Shostakovich was the chairman of the jury. He began his career as a conductor at the Sofia Opera (1957-1964). In 1962, he headed the Sofia Soloists chamber orchestra and worked as its chief conductor until 1978. International School of Condensed Matter Physics

From 26 to 30 August 2024, the 23rd International School on Condensed Matter Physics (ISCMP'23) was held at the Frederic Joliot-Curie International House of Scientists. With the scientific forum entitled "Modern Advances in New Materials and their Applications", the Institute of Solid State Physics celebrated the 155th anniversary of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Prestigious International Award for Corr. Member Svetozar Margenov

  The International Academy of Information Technology and Quantitative Management (IAITQM) honored Corr. Mem. Svetozar Margenov with the Walter Scott 2024 Award for his outstanding achievements and creativity in the advancement of the theory, algorithms, education and applications of information technology. The Walter Scott 2023 Award winner was Prof. Jack Dongarra who in 2021 was also awarded one of the most prestigious prizes in the field of computational algorithms in Turing's name. Corr. Mem. Margenov has been elected a Fellow of the International Academy of Information Technology and Quantitative Management (IAITQM).

First finds of placoderm gar-fishes in Bulgaria, discovered in the dinosaur locality near the town of Tran

A team led by Asst. Vladimir Nikolov from the National Museum of Natural History at BAS (NMNHS-BAS) published the description of the first fossil remains of armoured gars in Bulgaria in the specialized scientific journal Cretaceous Research. The fossils are about 83 million years old and were discovered in the dinosaur locality near the town of Tran in the period 2020-2023. Co-authors of Asst. Project meeting between the Institute of Optical Materials and Technologies and National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, Taiwan

A working meeting of the teams of the bilateral cooperation project between the Institute of Optical Materials and Technologies (IOMT-BAS) and National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, Taiwan, was held at the Center of Excellence "Mechatronics and Clean Technologies" - Geo Milev Campus. The meeting which took place on 15 August was on "New materials for next generation integrated optics, optoelectronics and spintronics: synthesis and applications". Coordinators from the Bulgarian side are Prof. DSc Vera Marinova and for Taiwan: Prof. Shiuan Huei Lin. The event marked 22 years of official scientific research cooperation between the partners with a series of lectures by Bulgarian and Taiwanese scientists.
