Scientists of BAS with honors for excellence

Three scientists from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences will receive honors for excellence from the Union of Scientists in Bulgaria. This was announced at a solemn assembly on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Union by Prof. Diana Petkova. Prof. Angela Slavova-Popivanova from the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics, Dr. Radostina Ivanova from the Institute of Organic Chemistry with Center of Phytochemistry and Dr. Ivanka Petrova-Doycheva from the Institute of Mechanics will receive their awards at a special ceremony. Chinese delegation visited BAS

A delegation of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), led by Vice President Prof. Xie Xincheng, visited the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The President of BAS Prof. Julian Revalski, Member of the Academy, and the Scientific Secretary-General, Prof. Evdokia Pasheva, DSc discussed opportunities for future joint research projects. Academician Revalski presented the structure of the Academy, its research areas and institutes to the Chinese scientists. As a good example, he highlighted the collaboration of scientists at the Institute of Electrochemistry of BAS with China's largest producer of lead batteries. During the meeting, the establishment of contacts between scientists from the two institutions working in areas of mutual interest was discussed. The 160th anniversary of the birth of Academician Aleksandar Teodorov-Balan was celebrated by BAS and Sofia University

The 160th anniversary of the birth of Academician Aleksandar Teodorov-Balan was celebrated by the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski". The Vice-President of BAS corr.-mem. Vassil Nikolov and University Rector Prof. Anastas Gerdjikov opened the event which took place on 24 October 2019 in the aula of Sofia University. Acad. Aleksandar Teodorov-Balan was elected member of the Bulgarian Learned Society in 1884 when he was only holding the scientific degree PhD of Charles University in Prague, said Academician Mikhail Videnov. He recalled that Balan was appointed first rector of Sofia University in 1888 and told curious events from the time he was a young researcher in the Czech capital. Forty scientists are discussing the intangible cultural heritage at BAS

Bulgaria is one of the first countries in the world to fulfill the condition of the 2003 UNESCO Convention on the establishment of a National Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage. That was highlighted as a major contribution of the Academy’s scientists by corr.-mem. Mila Santova at the international scientific conference “Current Issues in the Study of the Intangible Cultural Heritage and the Implementation of the 2003 Convention. The Contribution of the Scientists of BAS”. The two-day conference has begun on 17 October at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and is dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the Academy. UNESCO presents the achievements of BAS in Paris

At the initiative of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Academy is included in the UNESCO program for 2019. On this occasion, a photo exhibition of BAS at the UNESCO premises in Paris is presenting the activities of the Academy to the international community. The opening of the exhibition took place on 16 October in the presence of ambassadors, Bulgarians living and working in France and representatives of the scientific community. An international research team receives the prestigious European Research Council Synergy Grant

Assoc. Prof. Anelia Kasabova from the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Studies with Ethnographic Museum of BAS is part of the interdisciplinary and international research team whose project "Taming the European Leviathan: The Legacy of Post-War Medicine and the Common Good (LEVIATHAN)” is among the 37 proposals approved for funding by the European Research Council (ERC) for 2019. The project is in the synergy category for small teams of highly qualified researchers. For the first time a Bulgarian scientist has won recognition in this category.
