The Director of the Institute for Nuclear Research and Nuclear Energy at BAS (INRNE-BAS), Prof. Dimitar Tonev, PhD, attended the official opening ceremony of the National Radioactive Waste Repository (NRWR). The facility was opened on April 14, 2026, by Caretaker Minister of Energy Traicho Traikov in the presence of experts from the nuclear sector, international partners, and representatives of academia and the government. Minister Traikov described the repository as “the most modern industrial building in Bulgaria” and a strategic facility that completes the cycle of safe management of low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste in the country. The Institute of Electrochemistry and Energy Systems at BAS held an Open Day on 16 October. High school students from "Paisius of Hilendar" Sofia High School of Mathematics, students from the University for Chemical Technology and Metallurgy - Sofia, lecturers from American College - Sofia and seventh graders from the “Prof. Vasil Zlatarski” Secondary School for Western and Eastern Languages together with their teachers visited the institute and met the scientists. The Institute for Nuclear Research and Nuclear Energy at BAS (INRNE-NAS) is hosting the First International Conference on Operational Behaviour, Modelling and Experimental Support of Light Water Reactor Fuel, taking place in Nessebar, Bulgaria, from 14 to 19 September 2025. The event is organised in collaboration with some of the leading companies in the sector, including Framatome, Westinghouse, Studsvik and Kozloduy NPP. The Institute for Nuclear Research and Nuclear Energy at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (INRNE-BAS) hosted a key final training on the search and security of radioactive sources, carried out in close cooperation with the US Department of Energy. The event, which took place on 6 June, was part of a global effort to enhance the safety, control and safe disposal of radioactive materials worldwide.
