Demonstration project for hydrogen deployment in transport is being developed by BAS

A prototype of a trolleybus, which Bulgarian scientists of BAS are transforming into a hydrogen-powered transport vehicle, was shown to the EU Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth Mariya Gabriel, the Executive Director of the public-private partnership “Clean Hydrogen” Bart Biebuyck, and the President of BAS Prof. Julian Revalski, Full Member of the Academy. The development of Bulgaria's first demonstration project for hydrogen deployment in transport was presented at “Levski” trolleybus depot. For the first time in Bulgaria the "retro fitting" method is applied to transform a trolleybus into a hydrogen electric vehicle. The trolleybus will not only be powered by overhead lines, but will also perform a 100-kilometre hydrogen run. The development is part of the implementation of the National Scientific Programme [...]

Two young scientists with awards from Sofia Electrochemical Days SED`22

Research Assistant Dr. Krum Banov and Senior Assistant Dr. Borislava Mladenova from IEES-BAS are the winners of the competition for young scientists, which was held within Sofia Electrochemical Days SED `22. Krum Banov won the award for the best oral presentation and Borislava Mladenova made the best poster presentation. The prizes were awarded by the chairman of the international jury Prof. DSc Eng.  Martin Bojinov from UCTM-Sofia. The two young scientists received award plaques, diplomas from IEES-BAS and a one-time financial incentive from UCTM-Sofia. Sofia Electrochemical Days SED`22 were opened on 11 May by the President of BAS Prof. Julian Revalski, Full Member of the Academy. In his speech, he recalled the necessity of holding conferences to share knowledge between more experienced and young colleagues [...]

100 years since the birth of acad. Evgeni Budevski

Scientists from the Institute of Electrochemistry and Energy Systems (IEES) celebrated the 100th anniversary of the birth of the founder and patron of the Institute, Acad. Evgeni Budevski. The memorial session was attended by several generations of close colleagues and collaborators, friends and followers of the eminent scientist-electrochemist. The most outstanding scientific achievements of the long-standing Director of IEES and memories of his inspiring personality were recalled. The participants in the celebration were addressed by the brother of Acad. Budevski - Prof. Dr. Omurtag Budevski and his nephew Flotilla Admiral Prof. Dr. Boyan Mednikarov, Rector of “Nikola Vaptsarov” Naval Academy. Also participating were scientists from SU “St. Kliment Ohridski", UCTM, scientific units of BAS as well as business representatives. The host and moderator of the [...]

A new study of the natural radioactivity of mineral waters by nuclear physics methods

Fig. 1 Some of the studied mineral springs in Bankya, Sapareva Banya and Ognyanovo village Detailed investigations of the natural radioactivity of the mineral springs widely used by the people in the territory of South-Western Bulgaria have been carried out by scientists from the Institute for Nuclear Research and Nuclear Energy of BAS (INRNE).  The study is related to the increased public interest in the quality of drinking and mineral waters in Bulgaria. New discovery at CERN with the participation of scientists from INRNE-BAS – first experimental observation of the odderon

First on the list of exciting results at CERN for 2021 is the experimental observation of odderon exchange in elastic proton-proton and proton-antiproton interactions. One of the lead scientists of this experiment is Dr. Georgi Antchev from the Institute for Nuclear Research and Nuclear Energy of BAS. He is the author of the data acquisition and processing systems and the coordinator of both the installation of these systems in the LHC tunnel and the testing and putting into operation of detectors. Odderons (a family of virtual, color-neutral states composed of an odd number of gluons) were predicted theoretically in 1973. The TOTEM, experiment, conducted at the LHC at CERN , studies the elastic scattering of protons which yields important information about the interaction and structure of these elementary particles. [...]
