Forty scientists are discussing the intangible cultural heritage at BAS

Bulgaria is one of the first countries in the world to fulfill the condition of the 2003 UNESCO Convention on the establishment of a National Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage. That was highlighted as a major contribution of the Academy’s scientists by corr.-mem. Mila Santova at the international scientific conference “Current Issues in the Study of the Intangible Cultural Heritage and the Implementation of the 2003 Convention. The Contribution of the Scientists of BAS”. The two-day conference has begun on 17 October at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and is dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the Academy. An international research team receives the prestigious European Research Council Synergy Grant

Assoc. Prof. Anelia Kasabova from the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Studies with Ethnographic Museum of BAS is part of the interdisciplinary and international research team whose project "Taming the European Leviathan: The Legacy of Post-War Medicine and the Common Good (LEVIATHAN)” is among the 37 proposals approved for funding by the European Research Council (ERC) for 2019. The project is in the synergy category for small teams of highly qualified researchers. For the first time a Bulgarian scientist has won recognition in this category. Scientist of BAS was awarded an Italian Order

Corr.-mem. Prof. Alexander Kostov, DSc of the Institute of Balkan Studies with Center of Thracology was awarded the Order of the Star of Italy (Ordine della Stella d'Italia). The high state distinction is for his contribution to the development of relations between the two countries in the field of science and culture. The Order was bestowed by H.E. Stefano Baldi. Corresponding Member Alexander Kostov has a number of publications on the modern and contemporary history of the Balkans and on the development of Italy's relations with the countries of the region in particular. A 7600-year-old grave was discovered in Slatina by archaeologists from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences

Early Neolithic grave, about 7 600 years old, was discovered by a team of archaeologists led by corr.-member Vassil Nikolov, Vice-President of BAS, in Slatina settlement. The find is extremely rare. The forthcoming studies will provide information on the physical characteristics of the people who gave birth to the first European civilization in today's Bulgarian lands. According to corr.-member Nikolov, the scientists have enough data on the way of life of the people in the settlement of Slatina but it has not yet been established what the funeral practices were. Fifth Graders learned about the feasting rituals of lazaruvane with folklorists from IEFSEM – BAS

Scientists from the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Studies with Ethnographic Museum of BAS introduced pupils from the 4th Primary School “Prof. John Atanasoff” in Sofia to the traditions on Lazar Day’s holiday called “lazaruvane”.
