Yana Petkova-Karakashova’s exhibition “On the Road” is on display in the foyer of the Academy until November 21.
The “BAS Presents:” initiative began on November 10 at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences with the opening of Yana Petkova-Karakashova’s exhibition “On the Road.” The idea came from the Vice-President of BAS, Prof. Emmanuel Moutafov. In this series of exhibitions, concerts, screenings, and performances, the Academy’s professional circles will present contemporary artists who stand out with high-quality works suitable for exhibition, interpretation, and promotion in the spaces of BAS.
“This exhibition marks the start of the “BAS Presents:” initiative. Our goal is to highlight contemporary Bulgarian artists who have attracted the attention of art critics, who experiment with the means of their academic education but also have an affinity for beauty, the traditions of Bulgarian artistic nature, are open to the world and the achievements of world art, possessing a talent that deserves to be supported and presented here.” With these words, the Vice-President opened the exhibition at BAS and presented his idea.
“I officially invite art critics from BAS to propose contemporary artists with works suitable for the Academy to participate in the initiative. The exhibitions will open on Mondays when galleries and museums are closed,” Prof. Moutafov announced, presenting the new project of BAS.
Address by Prof. Emmanuel Moutafov
The first event of the initiative is an exhibition by artist Yana Petkova-Karakashova. The “On the Road” exhibition consists of 27 paintings created during different periods of the artist’s development. The author has selected for BAS works from different cycles over the last few years, created with handmade paper, prints, oil and acrylic paints, ink, and pastels. They reveal her reverence for nature but all of them also contain an incredible emotional charge that relies more on color than on form.
About Yana Petkova and her art:
Yana Petkova holds a master’s degree in Textiles from the Faculty of Applied Arts at the National Academy of Art in the class of Prof. Anna Boyadzhieva. Even before graduating in 2006, she organized her first solo exhibition – handmade paper entitled “In November” at the Noema Gallery, Sofia. This promising start was followed by a second solo exhibition, “On One Wall,” at the ENA Gallery in Sofia, again in 2006. Her other solo exhibition, “Shores and Rocks” at the Arte Gallery in Sofia, was in 2021. Three years later, she held her third solo exhibition, “Traces of Memories,” at the Arte Gallery in Sofia. Her biography also includes three participations in international events: in Skopje, Poland, and Turkey. Her works have been exhibited in joint art exhibitions as early as 1998 in Sofia, Burgas, Pleven, and Kyustendil.
Yana Petkova has a special interest in working with handmade paper, monotype, printing, graphic, painting, and applied techniques. She is a member of the Union of Bulgarian Artists – Textile Section. “On the Road” is her fifth solo exhibition.
“Yana Petkova has certainly outgrown the practicality of her education, she has emancipated herself from her family burden and says decisively that the path is hers and she will walk it as a master,” Vice-President Prof. Emmanuel Moutafov said at the opening of the exhibition.
Come and see it at BAS until November 21, 2025.
