A new exhibition of artworks by academicians and corresponding members of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences was presented in the Winter Garden Hall of the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Studies with Ethnographic Museum of BAS. During the event, the album “155 Years of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. 155 Works of Art from the Collections of BAS” was also presented. The bilingual edition includes works of art from the collections of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
This wonderful publication allows us to enjoy the beautiful exhibits presented in it, accompanied by short and informative texts that take us back in time, said BAS President Corr. Memb. Evelina Slavcheva during the opening. She pointed out that the efforts of many people had been combined in this event and noted that this was only the beginning of a sustainable initiative. The initiative was launched by Prof. Julian Revalski, Member of BAS (President of the Academy 2016-2024), specified Corr. Memb. Slavcheva.
These priceless works included in the album are located in various institutes of the Academy, photographed in a magnificent way, and an article has been written for each work so that the Bulgarian public can see the treasure that BAS has, said Prof. Revalski. Regarding the opening of the exhibition of works by academicians, Prof. Revalski said he was surprised that BAS did not have a collection of its members’ works. He said that the Academy’s Governing Council had decided to create such a collection and, after discussions, the hall in the BAS Ethnographic Museum had been chosen.
My belief is that beauty should be accessible to everyone, noted Prof. Revalski. The exhibition includes ten works – paintings and sculptures by Dechko Uzunov, Andrey Daniel, Todor Dinov, Iliya Petrov, Ivan Nenov, Rumen Skorchev, Svetlin Rusev, Krum Damyanov, and Vejdi Rashidov. This space is intended to be arranged by specialists, and I think it will be a wonderful place that BAS will be proud of because it features world-renowned names in the field of art, said Prof. Revalski.
The album project began in April 2024 at the request of the BAS leadership effectively reviving a forgotten tradition, said Dr. Maria Miteva from the BAS Institute of Art Studies who presented the team. The project is headed by Acad. Vassil Nikolov and coordinated by Prof. Joanna Spassova-Dikova, PhD. The album is published by the “Prof. Marin Drinov” Academic Publishing House.
The director of the National Art Gallery, Aneliya Nikolova, described the “155 Years of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. 155 Works of Art from the Collections of BAS” album as a serious scientific publication. The book itself is a work of art, she said.
During the presentation, performances were given by the “St. Paraskeva” academic choir of the National Academy of Art.
