On March 26, 2026, the results of the secret ballot held by all 42 academies – honorary members of the International Community of Academies (Κοινὸν) were announced regarding the election of members to the Executive Committee of the Plato Academy which is being revived in Athens. According to the Statutes of Κοινὸν, delegates from the Academies that are honorary members of the Community may elect three members to the Executive Committee. Among the nominees was the Vice-President of BAS Prof. Emmanuel Moutafov, DSc. With the most votes, Prof. Juan Antonio Mariano Mazzei of the Buenos Aires National Academy of Medicine, Argentina, and immediately following him, with an equal number of votes, Prof. E. Moutafov of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and Prof. Hans Joachim Schellnhuber of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, Rome were elected members of the Executive Committee.
The Executive Committee of the International Community of Academies meets once a year to approve the budget, the annual dues of the academies – honorary members, sets development policies, issues statements on scientific and cultural issues on a global scale, organizes scientific events, advises the Board of Directors, and so on.
In the same vote, two members of the Publications Committee for the publications of the honorary members were also elected – Prof. Xinwei Li of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and Prof. Muzaffer Şeker of the Turkish Academy of Sciences.
It is worth noting that Corr. Memb. Kostadin Ganev, former Vice-President of BAS, is among the distinguished members of the International Community of Academies.
The founding symposium of this international organization took place in early February of this year at the Academy of Athens in the presence of representatives of the global scientific, cultural, and business elite. One of the organization’s main goals is to restore Plato’s Academy in the Greek capital where a museum and research center will be built.
