With an open-air exhibition dedicated to the achievements of BAS scientific units and awarding of the leaders of the most successful projects under the Program for the support of young scientists and PhD students, the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences is opening the celebrations related to the 150th anniversary of the Academy. The events will take place on October 2, 2019 (Wednesday).

The President of BAS, Academician Julian Revalski, will open the exhibition on the Lovers’ Bridge of the National Palace of Culture at 11:30 am. The awards ceremony for 41 young scientists from BAS, organized by the Young Scientists Committee at the 7th General Assembly, will be held in the hall of the National Archaeological Museum of BAS from 5:00 pm (entry with invitations).

Silver commemorative coin “150 years Bulgarian Academy of Sciences” was put in circulation by the Bulgarian National Bank on September 16, 2019. Validation of a stamp on the occasion of the anniversary, a special documentary telling the history of the Academy, three books: about the building of BAS which is a monument of the Bulgarian cultural heritage, a brief history, donations and benefactors were prepared on the occasion of the holiday. An International Scientific Conference “Current Issues in the Study of the Intangible Cultural Heritage and the Implementation of the 2003 Convention. The Contribution of BAS Scientists” will be held at the Academy under the auspices of UNESCO.

A gala concert will take place on October 12 (Saturday), in Hall 1 of the National Palace of Culture. On this date, in 1869, the Bulgarian Learned Society was established in the Romanian city of Braila, and the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences is its successor.

On Saturday, October 12, BAS museums (Natural History, Ethnography, National Archaeological and National Anthropological Museums) and BAS Botanical Garden will have “free entry” for visitors.

The celebration calendar includes special events such as Open Days at the Academy’s institutes, scientific conferences, seminars, public lectures and more.

The Central Laboratory of Solar Energy and New Energy Sources of BAS (in the courtyard of the Scientific complex 2 of BAS, 72 Tsarigradsko Shose Blvd.) will present the first Demonstration Pavilion in Bulgaria with Nearly Zero-Energy consumption. On World Vision Day – 8 October, leading experts will speak at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences on the prevention and treatment of vision-threatening diseases. The event is organized by the Department of Medical Sciences at the Assembly of Academicians and Corresponding Members of BAS (AACM).

An exhibition at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris will present the activities of the Academy to the international community. The exhibitions “The Tomić Psalter from the Collection of the State Historical Museum in Moscow” of NAIM-BAS (entry with invitations) and “Technologies and materials to the benefit of society” at BAS are dedicated to the celebration.
