New Vice-Presidents and Scientific Secretary-General of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences were elected by the General Assembly of BAS. There are two Vice-Presidents: Prof. DSc Evdokia Pasheva and Corresponding Member DSc Stefan Hadjitodorov. Prof. Neli Koseva was elected Scientific Secretary-General.
Professor Evdokia Pasheva is a doctor of biological sciences. She has been working at BAS since 1980 – at the Institute of Organic Chemistry, and since 1983 at the Institute of Molecular Biology. She was elected Scientific Secretary-General of BAS in 2012 and 2017.
Areas of scientific interest of Prof. Pasheva are molecular and cell biology, genome stability, cellular mechanisms of oncogenesis, anti-tumour agents, DNA / protein interactions. She has 64 scientific publications.
Corresponding member Stefan Hadjitodorov is a doctor of technical sciences. He has been working at BAS since 1983 – Central Laboratory of Biomedical Engineering. He was Scientific Secretary of the Academy, responsible for engineering sciences, in 1992-2008 and Scientific Secretary-General of BAS in 2008-2012.
Corresponding Member Hadjitodorov specialises in data analysis, image recognition, classification, statistical and fuzzy methods for recognition and classification, neural networks, two-level classifiers, speech signal analysis, applications of image recognition theory in medicine and other fields, research management and research on national security issues. His scientific publications in the country and abroad are 79.
Neli Koseva is a professor in the field of chemical sciences (polymers and polymeric materials) and is a co-author of 78 scientific papers. She is the head of the research department “Polymers for Alternative Energy and Environmental Protection” at the Institute of Polymers of BAS while in the period 2012 – 2020 she was director of the institute.
The areas of professional interest of Prof. Koseva are synthesis and modification of polymers by controlled radical polymerization and polymerization with ring opening, polycondensation or polymer-like reactions; design and synthesis of nanosized polymer therapeutics, polymer-drug conjugates and polyplexes, development of drug delivery systems based on natural and synthetic polymers, application of polyphosphoesters as carriers of biologically active substances – radioprotectors, antitumour agents, etc.; physical methods (IR, NMR spectroscopy, dynamic and static light scattering, atomic force microscopy) for characterization of polymers and polymeric materials.
The election of Vice-Presidents and Scientific Secretary-General took place on 18 January 2021, after Prof. Julian Revalski, Full Member of BAS, was elected President of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences for a second term on 30 November 2020 for the period 2020-2024. A meeting of the VIII General Assembly of BAS was held by videoconferencing and present voting according to a pre-specified schedule in compliance with all anti-epidemic measures.
