The 2023 Pythagoras Awards of the Ministry of Education and Science were presented at a solemn ceremony held on May 19 at the University of National and World Economy. Two scientists from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences were awarded the prestigious prize.
An established scientist in the field of social sciences and humanities is sociologist Prof. Pepka Boyadjieva, DSc from the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of BAS.
In the category for established scientist in the field of natural and engineering sciences the award goes to Prof. Stoycho Yazadzhiev, DSc, from Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” and the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics of BAS who is a corresponding member of the Academy.
Clarivate Analytics presented the award for the best science metrics in the areas innovation and climate change to the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The award was received by the President of BAS, Prof. Julian Revalski, Full Member of the Academy, who noted that despite difficulties the Academy continues to be the largest and most efficient scientific organisation. He stressed that BAS provides 40% of the scientific output visible in the world databases.
“Many people do not realise what a feat it is to do science in Bulgaria and what challenges our scientists face. However, I dare say that Bulgarian science continues to hold a world-class position in a number of fields of knowledge, for which I congratulate all of you.” With these words the Minister of Education and Science Prof. Sasho Penov opened the award ceremony.
The ceremony will be broadcast on the Bulgarian National Television at 18:00 o’clock on 24 May.
