The President of BAS Prof. Julian Revalski, Member of the Academy, took part in a discussion organized by the Ministry of Environment and Water (MoEW) to discuss the impact of climate change on the specificity of the Black Sea and environmental protection in its basin in the Bulgarian pavilion at COP28 in Dubai.

In three thematic events, scientists and representatives of international organizations discussed issues related to the Black Sea ecosystem, the prospects for restoring Ukraine in an ecological way and conclusions from the work of Bulgarian scientists in Antarctica.

BAS is an active participant in the process of climate change research because it has several institutes for studying everything related to environmental protection, biodiversity, said Prof. Revalski. “We are entrusted with the monitoring of the Black Sea. Everything that stems from European directives, from Bulgarian laws, is carried out by our Institute of Oceanology. This is an extremely important activity because by observing the processes we can assess what the impact of climate change is at a certain time and plan measures for rehabilitation, for reconstruction. We will continue to be a sustainable partner in this respect. BAS has 14 monitoring networks, not only for the Black Sea,” he also said.

Assoc. Prof. Nikolay Valchev, Director of the Institute of Oceanology of BAS (via conference call) presented the results of the latest research of the Institute of Oceanology on whether global warming was likely to lead to the disappearance of the cold intermediate layer which might lead to changes in the thermohaline balance of the waters in the Black Sea and disruptions in the functioning of ecosystems.

The event was held in the framework of the UN World Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai whose main themes were the role and conservation of soils, the capture and storage of carbon, ocean health and water management, protection of fragile ecosystems and communities.

We are publishing the interview of Prof. Revalski given to the BNA special envoy Antoaneta Markova.
