How electoral attitudes are formed: a methodological experiment reveals the factors determining the emergence and development of electoral attitudes

In 2020-2022, the Social Survey Research Center of the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology - BAS has implemented a research project on the processes of public opinion formation and the possibilities to improve through mathematical modeling the sociological tools for predicting the development of public attitudes on important issues for Bulgarian society. One of the focuses of the project is the processes of formation of electoral attitudes and electoral behavior. For the purposes of the project, a post-electoral survey was conducted in 2022, which took the form of a methodological experiment. Two separate studies were implemented in parallel - with the same research instruments but in two methodological formats: a nationally representative survey (standardized interview) and an online survey using the method of "respondents”. Comparing [...]

Evolutionary processes in astrophysics: synergy of observations with theory

The North America Nebula - a cradle of star formation The project "Evolutionary processes in astrophysics: synergy of observations with theory" of a team of scientists from the Institute of Astronomy with National Astronomical Observatory (IA with NAO) has been successfully completed. The scientific achievements of the project are in the areas of galaxy evolution, star formation, main sequence stars, symbiotic stars, the Sun and the Solar System. The results have been published in 70 papers, with a total impact factor = 213.326 and a total impact rank = 10.418, and presented at 35 national and international conferences. A total of 45 participations in scientific forums were made during the two phases of the project. Three dissertations were defended and 2 scientific forums [...]

First report with evidence that pandas lived in our country millions of years ago

Prehistoric Panda In the article „A late Turolian giant panda from Bulgaria and the early evolution and dispersal of the panda lineage“ published in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology, Prof. Nikolai Spassov from the National Museum of Natural History of BAS and his Chinese colleague Qigao Jiangzuo describe a new species of fossil giant panda (Agriarctos nikolovi) that inhabited Bulgaria about 6 million years ago, at the end of the Miocene. The description of the species is based on the finding of fossil teeth stored in the collection of NMNHS - BAS. The evolution of the panda is poorly known due to very limited fossil remains. It is assumed that the direct ancestor of today's panda is the fossil Chinese genus Ailuraerctos which lived 8-6 [...]

In vitro cultures of a medicinal plant studied by scientists of BAS

Scientists from BAS are developing in vitro systems to direct the accumulation of targeted secondary metabolites in Bulgarian medicinal plants. In vitro cultures of the medicinal plant British yellowhead (Inula britannica L.) were used in the research. The plant is popular in Chinese Traditional Medicine, where it is used in asthma and as a cough expectorant in pulmonary diseases. In Japanese Kampo traditional practice, a decoction of the flowers is used by nausea and as an expectorant. Pharmacological studies on extracts of various parts of the plant have shown their potential as a hepatoprotective, anticancer and anti-inflammatory agent. Scientific studies on the plant substantiate these activities by the presence of sesquiterpene lactones, diterpenes and flavonoids. The experiment conducted was with in vitro cultures obtained from [...]
