The President of BAS, Corr. Memb. Evelina Slavcheva met today at BAS with Acad. Yongguan Zhu, professor in biogeochemistry and soil environmental sciences, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Vice-President of its International Science Council. Acad. Zhu presented the 2021-2025 “Urban Health and Wellbeing in the Anthropocene” Action Plan developed under the International Science Council's Programme of the same name. Corr. Memb. Slavcheva presented the structure of BAS, the scientific divisions and the scientific cooperation with Chinese organizations. The President of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Corr. Memb. Evelina Slavcheva, visited the University of Osaka and met with the Dean of the School of Foreign Languages Prof. Sayo Tsutsui. The meeting, which took place on 7 October, was attended by Prof. Masaaki Shimizu, Head of the Foreign Studies Division, Prof. Dr. Katsumi Fujiwara, Head of the Russian Language Department, Ivo Vladimirov, Lecturer in Bulgarian, Old Bulgarian and Balkan Studies, and five students studying Bulgarian at the Faculty. Iconic musicals came to life on the stage of “Prof. Marin Drinov” Hall at BAS. Students and PhD students from the “Pop and Jazz Singing”, “Operetta and Musical” and “Music and Stage Direction” majors from the acting class of Prof. Violeta Gorcheva from the Vocal Faculty of the National Music Academy gave a concert-performance entitled “Sing with Broadway!” on October 6. In front of a crowded hall, the young artists performed parts from the “Chicago”, “The Greatest Showman”, “Les Misérables” and “Welcome to Burlesque” musicals. Their performances presented also attractive choreography including off-stage performances. The youngsters showed enviable movement, breathing and singing skills simultaneously - without a microphone and accompanied only by a grand piano.   The President of BAS, Corr. Memb. Evelina Slavcheva, participated in the 18th edition of the “Academy of Science Presidents' Meeting” which is organized annually by the “Science Council of Japan” within the framework of the “Science and Technology in Society” forum (STS forum). “Innovation-promoting approaches to science funding” was the topic of discussion for this year's Meeting. Each participant was given the opportunity to share their institution's experience with securing funding for promising research in priority areas, and the positives and negatives of existing mechanisms for approving research projects for funding were discussed. Sylvia Varhoshkova, PhD student at the Institute of Molecular Biology at BAS, represented Bulgaria at the 11th International Final of the competition “My Thesis in 180 Seconds” which took place on October 2 in Bucharest, Romania. After winning the first prize at the national final of the competition which took place on 28 May this year at the “Prof. Marin Drinov” Hall of BAS, Sylvia Varhoshkova presented her dissertation topic “Role and dynamics of FET proteins at sites of complex DNA damage” to an international audience.
