The Ambassador of the Republic of France to Bulgaria, H.E. Florence Robin, visited the Stephan Angeloff Institute of Microbiology (IMicB) together with Veneta Salyahetdinova, a tenth-grader from Blagoevgrad, winner of the “Ambassador for a Day” competition. The director of the institute, Prof. Penka Petrova, presented the laboratories of the departments "Immunology", "Virology" and Laboratory Center "Pasteur", which carry out research to counter the pandemic of COVID-19. The Department of Immunology is developing two research projects funded by the Institut Pasteur in Paris. The VacciNanoCor project is led by Prof. Andrey Tchorbanov and aims to develop a Bulgarian vaccine against SARS-Cov-2. He is one of the leading mathematicians and theoretical physicists of the 20th and 21st centuries with outstanding contributions to algebraic geometry, algebraic topology and geometric aspects of mathematical physics, such as knot theory, quantization and mirror symmetry. The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences announces with deep sorrow that on 11 October 2020, after a short illness, Academician Iliya Georgiev Pashev died. Acad. Iliya Pashev is an iconic figure in Bulgarian molecular biology. He is the third academician (after Acad. Rumen Tsanev and Acad. Asen Hadjiolov Jr.) in this relatively young science for Bulgaria. He was born on 12 July 1938 in an intellectual Bulgarian family. His father Georgi Pashev was a member of the Union of Bulgarian Writers and is the author of dozens of books and short stories on historical topics. After graduating from high school in Plovdiv, Acad. Pashev enrolled in medicine at the Plovdiv Higher Medical Institute, graduating with honors in 1962.
