On the occasion of the Day of the National Enlighteners, the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences honoured scientists and journalists. At the solemn assembly which was held today in the “Prof. Marin Drinov Hall, the winners of the awards were announced. The President of BAS Prof. Julian Revalski, Member of the Academy, presented the awards and thanked the journalists for showing the public what the scientists in Bulgaria were doing.

The 2023 BAS Award for Journalists in the Electronic Media category was presented to Ani Baldjian, TV presenter of the “Good Morning Europe” program on Euronews Bulgaria and Anton Gruev, presenter of the “Futurism” program on Bloomberg TV Bulgaria. The award in the “Online Media” category was given to the photojournalist Minko Chernev from the Bulgarian News Agency. For 2023. The special award for the overall long-term coverage of BAS activities was presented to the Bulgarian News Agency. The winner of the award “For correct and rich Bulgarian speech in journalism” is the presenter of the program “Istoria.BG” on BNT Georgi Angelov.

At the solemn assembly, the “Marin Drinov” Honorary medal on a ribbon was received by Academician Krassimir Atanassov for his contribution to raising the prestige of Bulgarian science at home and abroad. The badge of honour “FOR SERVICE TO BAS” was awarded to Dr. Nikolai Poppetrov and Assoc. Prof. Ina Aneva. Dr. Poppetrov from the Institute for Historical Studies was honored for his scientific contributions to the study of the recent history of Bulgaria and for his scientific and popularization activities. Assoc. Prof. Aneva who is Scientific Secretary in the Biodiversity, Bioresources and Ecology division received an award for her high scientific achievements and her outstanding contribution to the promotion of the activities of BAS.

Prof. Rumyana Damyanova from the Institute of Literature of BAS delivered a speech on “Dr. Petar Beron: The Universe Man”. In 2024, with various initiatives, BAS celebrated the 200th anniversary of the publication of the Fish Primer and the 225th anniversary of the birth of Dr. Petar Beron. For the celebration, Dr. Petar Beron’s telescope tube which he used in his studies was exhibited at the Academy. The valuable exhibit had been provided by the National Polytechnic Museum.

Prof. Damyanova announced the proposal of Acad. Nikola Sabotinov (President of BAS 2008 – 2012) to establish a scientific award after the name of Dr. Petar Beron for innovations, achievements and creativity.

The Central Library of BAS opened an exhibition dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the publication of the Fish Primer for the Day of the National Enlighteners.
