The project “Bulgarian Online Encyclopaedia . Connected and accessible encyclopaedic knowledge” has been presented at the first information day on the project activities at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences by the Institute of Information and Communication Technologies and the “Bulgarian Encyclopaedia ” Scientific Information Centre of BAS. The aim of the project is to develop a specialized online platform including multifunctional databases. Through the platform, the rich resource of scientific encyclopaedic articles, archival materials (documents and photos) will be digitized, structured and made available for public use.
Prof. Ivan Lirkov, Prof. Kiril Simov from IICT and Dr. Ralitsa Geleva-Tsvetkova from the “Bulgarian Encyclopaedia ” Scientific Information Centre presented the activities of the project. The event was attended by Prof. Julian Revalski, Member of the Academy (President of BAS 2016-2024), the Vice-President of BAS Prof. Emmanuel Moutafov, representatives of the academic community and participants in the project.
The project, funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan, involves both the digitisation of existing paper archives and printed encyclopaedia s and the development of new encyclopaedic content. Specialised software tools are to be developed to support the overall process of encyclopaedic content creation.
The “Bulgarian Encyclopaedia ” Scientific Information Centre was established in 1955 as an independent unit of BAS and is the only specialised centre in Bulgaria for the creation of encyclopaedia s. This year will mark 70 years since its establishment.
