An event on the occasion of the World Day for Glaciers (21 March), World Water Day (22 March) and World Meteorological Day (23 March) with the participation of scientists, students and teachers was held at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences today. This forum was organised by the Climate, Atmosphere and Water Research Institute at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (CAWRI-BAS).
“Today for the first time is celebrated the World Day for Glaciers (21 March), declared by UNESCO and the World Meteorological Organization,” the Director of CAWRI Corr. Memb. Ekaterina Batchvarova said. She opened the event and noted that the themes of the forum’s programme were related to the protection of glaciers and the huge importance they had for the climate. The Scientific Secretary of the “Climate Change, Hazards and Natural Resources” and “Astronomy, Space Research and Technologies” division Corr. Memb. Daniela Jordanova also welcomed the participants.
Students and teachers from the “Academician Lyubomir Chakalov” National High School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, 36th “Maxim Gorky” High School, 44th “Neofit Bozveli” High School and the “Educational Technologies Private Specialized High School ” took part in the initiative. Scientists, experts and students presented current topics on water, glacier research and the future of society and water in a changing climate. Presentations and a film, a workshop, an exhibition of drawings and posters were shown.
During the event, a special session was broadcast live from Paris on the theme “Disappearing small glaciers in the mountains of Southeast Europe – the Balkans”.
