Иван Шопов Erik Dimitrov, Prof. Venko Beshkov (Chairman of the UChB) and Prof. Ivan Shopov Erik Dimitrov from the Institute of Polymers of BAS is awarded the "Outstanding Young Scientist in the field of Polymers" prize. It is named after Prof. Ivan Shopov and is awarded by the Union of Chemists in Bulgaria. The award was presented at a ceremony held on 1 March. Eric Dimitrov's research is dedicated to the development of novel nanostructured polymeric drug carriers. More than 100 schoolchildren and students went through the laboratories of the Institute of Electronics of BAS on the Open Doors Day held on 12 December. How biological tissue absorbs and scatters light and why food glows were told by scientists to primary school pupils, high school and university students. Researchers showed how to perform spectral analysis of foods and beverages based on their fluorescence. Through experiments, the scientists presented the basic laws of reflection, refraction and scattering of light. With demonstration models made of plasticine, students learned how cells attach to surfaces structured by the scientists at the institute. A session dedicated to the life and scientific achievements of Academician Jordan Malinowski was held on June 6 at the “Prof. Marin Drinov” Hall of BAS. The event was held on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of the great Bulgarian scientist and physical chemist, who is also the patron of the Institute of Optical Materials and Technologies (IOMT-BAS). Acad. Malinowski is one of the most distinguished scientists in the field of physical chemistry, with a contribution to the study of photographic processes, said in his speech the President of BAS Acad.   The fourteenth scientific session "Young scientists in the world of polymers", organised by the Institute of Polymers-BAS, was held on June 1. The event is part of the Institute's activities related to promoting the scientific achievements of young Bulgarian researchers engaged in the field of polymer materials to the academic community, business and the general public. Twenty-two young scientists from institutes of BAS and different universities presented their work. During the session were awarded student Rumena Stancheva from IP-BAS and PhD student Denitsa Nikolova from the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy at SU-Sofia. The 4th International Workshop "Size-Dependent Effect in Materials for Environmental Protection and Energy Application (SizeMat 4) is taking place from 10 to 14 May 2023 in Pomorie. The forum is dedicated to size-dependent effects in materials for environmental protection and clean energy generation as an innovative approach in the development of alternative materials with improved properties. The workshop is organized by the Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry at BAS (IGIC - BAS), which is one of the leading scientific organisations in Bulgaria in the field of materials chemistry. A meeting of scientists from the chemical institutes of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences with Dr. Sergey Varnavskiy, Business Development Manager for Southern Europe, Asia and Türkiye at Elsevier and Mr. Vladimir Danailov, Regional Director for Eastern Europe at Elsevier was held on 22.03.2023 at the "Ivan Evstratiev Geshov" Hall. At the meeting the possibilities of the Reaxys database in the field of chemical sciences were presented. The opportunities that Elsevier provides to support research in Bulgaria and their perspectives were also discussed.
