The Bulgarian LOFAR radio telescope will become operational in 2026

The Institute of Astronomy with NAO offers opportunities to participate in its construction through summer internships for students, doctoral students, and young scientists. By the end of 2026, Bulgaria will complete the construction of the first observatory in Southeast Europe for the world's largest low-frequency radio telescope – LOFAR (Low Frequency Array). This is a pan-European project involving 52 antenna stations in eight countries: the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, France, Ireland, Latvia, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. BAS becomes an honorary member of the revived Plato’s Academy

The community, called Κοινὸν τῶν Ἀκαδημιῶν in Greek, is also referred to as Koinon in English. The Koinon initiative carries on the legacy of the late philanthropist Panagiotis Aristofron who bequeathed his estate to the creation of an international organization dedicated to global cooperation among academies, distinguished scholars, artists, writers, and academic and cultural institutions. New exhibition and album with artworks from the collections of BAS

A new exhibition of artworks by academicians and corresponding members of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences was presented in the Winter Garden Hall of the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Studies with Ethnographic Museum of BAS. During the event, the album “155 Years of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. 155 Works of Art from the Collections of BAS” was also presented. The bilingual edition includes works of art from the collections of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. A memorandum of cooperation was signed between the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Art

The President of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS), Corr. Memb. Evelina Slavcheva, and the Rector of the National Academy of Art (NAA), Prof. Georgi Iankov, signed a Memorandum of Cooperation today at BAS. We have established long-standing cooperation and hope that by signing this document we will expand our partnership to include joint initiatives, the two said after the signing. Corr. Memb. Evelina Slavcheva presents the first prize in six professional categories at the Academic Oscars ceremony

The President of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Corr. Memb. Evelina Slavcheva, attended the tenth official ceremony awarding the best universities in Bulgaria for 2025 which were first in the ranking of higher education institutions by professional fields. The ceremony took place on January 27 at the NV Tower in Sofia, organized by the “24 Hours” media platform. Corr. Memb. Slavcheva presented to the Technical University of Sofia the award for first place in six professional fields (Electrical Engineering, Electronics, and Automation; Energy; Communication and Computer Engineering; Mechanical Engineering; General Engineering, and Transport, Shipping, and Aviation) and with the highest accreditation rating for engineering majors in the country. The study of the 4U 2206+54 star whose magnetic field is trillions of times stronger than that of the Sun was named the most significant scientific achievement of the Institute of Astronomy with NAO - BAS for 2025.
