Information and awareness-raising forum “Critical and strategic raw materials: expert opinions and prevailing attitudes in public opinion”

On November 11, 2025, BAS hosted an informational and promotional forum entitled “Critical and Strategic Raw Materials: Expert Opinions and Dominant Attitudes in Public Opinion.” The forum was opened by Assoc. Prof. Svetoslav Georgiev, Director of the Geological Institute at BAS and National Coordinator of the “Critical and Strategic Raw Materials for Green Transition and Sustainable Development” National Science Program. On behalf of the BAS leadership, the forum was welcomed by Assoc. Researchers from the Institute of Oceanology with an initiative on International Black Sea Day

Researchers from the Institute of Oceanology of BAS marked International Black Sea Day with an Open Day initiative in Varna and Sofia. Schoolchildren, students, and enthusiasts of marine science and nature met with marine researchers and had the opportunity to learn more about the challenges facing the Black Sea. At the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, scientists presented a poster exhibition showing the unique features of the Black Sea and the impact of human activities on its sustainability as well as short films about the activities of the Institute of Oceanology of BAS. Marine measuring systems were demonstrated, including an underwater and aerial drone, an Argo probe, a wave measurement buoy, a radar sensor for sea level, and others. Over 40 scientists present their research at a geophysical conference at BAS

The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences hosted the XII National Geophysical Conference with international participation which was held under the title "New Challenges in Geophysics" on 29 and 30 September at the “Prof. Marin Drinov” Hall. On behalf of the leadership of BAS, the conference was addressed by Corr. Memb. Daniela Jordanova, scientific secretary of the division. Over 40 scientists from the National Institute of Geophysics, Geodesy and Geography (NIGGG) – BAS, the Institute of Information and Communication Technologies - BAS, "St. Ivan Rilski" University of Mining and Geology, Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”, the University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy, as well as guest speakers from Great Britain, Austria and Sweden presented their research in the field of seismology, remote sensing, paleo- and archaeomagnetism [...]

“Blue Cristal” project for sustainable management of coastal and river environment launched

  The "Blue Coastal Marine and Riverine Innovative & Sustainable Management of Environments and Resources - BLUE-CRISTAL" Centre of Competence was officially launched on 28 and 29 July with a workshop organized by the Institute of Oceanology - BAS - Varna. The consortium includes leading scientific and academic institutions, with lead partner Institute of Oceanology - BAS, Varna, "Angel Kanchev" University of Ruse, Centre of Hydro- and Aerodynamics - Varna at the "Acad. А. Balevski" Institute of Metal Science, Equipment and Technologies  of BAS, Institute of Fish Resources - AAS, Varna,“NY Vaptsarov” Naval Academy and "Prof. Dr. Assen Zlatarov" State University, Burgas. Delegation from BAS participates in the Assembly of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO

The 33rd Assembly of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO took place from 25 June to 3 July 2025 at the UNESCO building in Paris. The Bulgarian delegation to the Assembly included: Prof. Valentina Todorova - Director of the Institute of Oceanology at BAS, Prof. Atanas Palazov - Chairman of the National Oceanographic Commission and Assoc. Prof. Nikolay Valchev - Vice-Chairman of the IOC. UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (UNESCO-IOC) promotes international cooperation in marine science to improve the management of the ocean, coasts and marine resources. IOC enables its 152 Member States to work together by coordinating programmes on capacity development, ocean observations and services, ocean science, tsunami warning and ocean literacy. „Financing the Stone – Fast-Tracking Projects” Round Table

Scientists from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences participated in a round table on "Financing the Stone - Fast-Tracking Projects".  The organizers of the forum which took place on 24 June in Sofia are the "National Committee of Bulgaria to the World Energy Council" association in cooperation with Nomad Energy Company and PRISM consortium. The event aimed to outline the main challenges and prospects for the mining industry as well as to examine strategic scenarios for developing and ensuring energy security on a national and regional scale. The Academy was represented by the Director of the Geological Institute at BAS, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Svetoslav Georgiev, and the Deputy Director Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dimitar Antonov.
