Conference on “Numerical Methods for Scientific Computations and Advanced Applications”

Scientists from leading universities and institutes in the Americas, Asia, and Europe participated in the fifth international conference “Numerical Methods for Scientific Computations and Advanced Applications” – NMSCAA’26.  The forum took place from June 15 to 18 in Sozopol and was organized by the Institute of Information and Communication Technologies of BAS. The conference was opened by Corresponding Member Svetozar Margenov. Traditionally, the topics covered included: modeling, simulation and optimization; multiscale and multiphysics problems; robust iterative methods and sparse matrix computation; fractional differential equations and non-local problems; parallel numerical methods and scalable algorithms; advanced applications in science and engineering. The scientific program also included presentations on new areas of research, such as synergies between parallel numerical methods and algorithms and artificial intelligence methods, new approaches [...]

IICT honors PhD students for their outstanding research and publication achievements

Awards for outstanding research and publication achievements have been presented to doctoral students at the Institute of Information and Communication Technologies of BAS (IICT) during a ceremony held today. This is the first time such an award has been established with the aim of encouraging and recognizing young researchers at the institute. The chair of the awards committee, Prof. Stanislav Harizanov, expressed his gratitude to the doctoral students who participated in the competition and their academic advisors. With best wishes for continued success in science, the awards were presented by Corresponding Member Margenov to: Miryana Raykovska, supervised by Prof. Ivan Georgiev, for her work on the creation of digital twins using high-resolution microstructural models obtained through industrial computed tomography. The applications of the results obtained [...]

The “Celebrating Women in Representation Theory” international conference held at IMI

From May 15 to 17, 2026, the International Center for Mathematical Sciences in Sofia (ICMS-Sofia) at the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics hosted the prestigious international conference “Celebrating Women in Representation Theory.” The event is part of the activities carried out by the Quantum Groups and Cluster Algebras research group at ICMS-Sofia led by Prof. Milen Yakimov. The forum was officially opened by Corresponding Member Peter Boyvalenkov, Director of the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics. In his address to the participants, he emphasized the importance of such events for the development and role of IMI as a leading center for international scientific cooperation. Prof. Velichka Milousheva, Deputy Director of IMI and Deputy Director of ICMS, also delivered a welcome address, noting that that day’s [...]

Innovative robotic system

A demonstration of an innovative robotic system was presented at the national scientific conference “Robotics and Mechatronics 2026” organized by the Institute of Robotics - BAS. The two-day forum was opened today by Academician Chavdar Roumenin and Director Prof. August Ivanov in the “Max Planck” Hall of the institute. Control of a mobile robot powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, an electronic system for real-time monitoring and control of small ruminants, and a drone developed under a contract within the “Security and Defense” National Scientific Program are the successful projects that scientists from the Institute of Robotics discussed in their plenary presentations. Current trends in robotics are focused on the development of energy-efficient and sustainable systems, particularly in the context of service and collaborative [...]

An innovative electronic shepherd is helping Bulgarian farmers

Scientists from the Institute of Robotics at BAS have developed an innovative electronic shepherd for use in agriculture. The system for electronically counting and tracking animals -sheep and goats - has been successfully implemented on Bulgarian farms. It includes remote monitoring and guidance of the animals for regulated and systematic grazing and watering, completely replacing traditional herding. The herd’s movement is monitored remotely, and real-time information is obtained on heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, and other biometric indicators without direct physical contact with the animal. The use of modern electronic tools for pasture-based livestock farming addresses farmers’ challenges related to the shortage of agricultural workers, facilitates the regulated use of pastures, helps maintain ecosystems, and increases productivity and the economic efficiency of labor in [...]

Bust-monument of Academician Blagovest Sendov at the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics of BAS

A bust-monument to Academician Blagovest Sendov was officially unveiled at the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics of BAS.  To honor the memory of this exceptional scientist, public figure, and visionary, the official ceremony was attended by Minister of Education and Science Krasimir Valchev, BAS President Corr. Memb. Evelina Slavcheva, BAS President Prof. Julian Revalski, Member of the Academy (2016-2024 term of office), relatives, friends, and representatives of the academic community. Academician Sendov was the first director of the International Center for Mathematical Sciences at the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics of BAS, said Director Corr. Memb. Peter Boyvalenkov, adding that it was no coincidence that the monument was placed in front of his office. I believe that the work of Acad. Sendov will be continued [...]
