Bulgaria is one of the first countries in the world to fulfill the condition of the 2003 UNESCO Convention on the establishment of a National Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage. That was highlighted as a major contribution of the Academy’s scientists by corr.-mem. Mila Santova at the international scientific conference “Current Issues in the Study of the Intangible Cultural Heritage and the Implementation of the 2003 Convention. Assoc. Prof. Anelia Kasabova from the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Studies with Ethnographic Museum of BAS is part of the interdisciplinary and international research team whose project "Taming the European Leviathan: The Legacy of Post-War Medicine and the Common Good (LEVIATHAN)” is among the 37 proposals approved for funding by the European Research Council (ERC) for 2019. Corr.-mem. Prof. Alexander Kostov, DSc of the Institute of Balkan Studies with Center of Thracology was awarded the Order of the Star of Italy (Ordine della Stella d'Italia). The high state distinction is for his contribution to the development of relations between the two countries in the field of science and culture. The Order was bestowed by H.E. Stefano Baldi. Corresponding Member Alexander Kostov has a number of publications on the modern and contemporary history of the Balkans and on the development of Italy's relations with the countries of the region in particular.
