The XVII National school for doctoral students and young researchers in the social sciences, titled “Participation in open science: contributing to accessible knowledge and addressing complex global challenges” was held from May 11 to 13 in a hybrid format - in Varna and online. The Institute for the State and Law organized a scientific seminar titled “White-Collar Crime in a Global Context: Comparative Perspectives from China and Bulgaria” on April 24. Lawyers from both countries discussed the types and characteristics of crimes committed by highly qualified professionals within the legal systems of Bulgaria and China. In both Bulgaria and China, a wide range of criminal acts fall into this category: bribery, embezzlement, various types of fraud, money laundering, tax and financial crimes, and others. Key issues related to proving these criminal acts were discussed during the seminar. A national representative survey - unique in its nature and scope - has been launched as part of project BG05SFPR002-1.020-0001-C01 “Improving Policy in Response to Demographic Change” . The aim of the survey is to identify the main challenges facing the country’s demographic development and, on this basis, to formulate appropriate policies to address these challenges at the national and regional levels. The survey has been prepared by an inter-institutional research team from the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology at BAS, the Institute for Population and Human Studies at BAS, and the Economic Research Institute at BAS. Prof. Irena Zareva, PhD, Director of the Economic Research Institute at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, received a certificate from Bulgarian President Iliana Iotova during the official ceremony of the“Business to the rules” national awards competition for 2025. The competition was organized by the Bulgarian Industrial Capital Association, and the award for the institute, along with the Ministry of Economy and Industry (MEI), is in the category: “For a legislative act or administrative practice leading to the reduction of the shadow economy and the improvement of the business environment.” At the request of MEI, economists of BAS had been preparing a weekly report on producer prices from July to December 2025 with the aim of providing objective and accurate information on changes in producer prices [...]

The President of BAS, Corr. Memb. Evelina Slavcheva, and the Vice-President Prof. Emmanuel Moutafov attended the academic lecture by Prof. Kiril Kartalov entitled “Pius XII and the Jewish Question.” The topic is completely innovative for specialized Bulgarian literature and to a large extent for world literature as well as it is based on Vatican archives access to which has only be permitted since 2020. Prof. Kartalov examines one of the most significant and controversial topics in papal diplomacy in his book, explaining the Holy See's position on the Jewish question during the Holocaust and attempting to interpret the so-called silence of Pius XII. An international scientific conference with the participation of scientists from Spain, Romania, Lithuania, Turkey, Italy, Portugal, North Macedonia, and Bulgaria was held at the Economic Research Institute of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
