Three women scientists from the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences won fellowships under the programme of the Institute of Mathematical Sciences of the Americas at the University of Miami.

The International Center for Mathematical Sciences (ICMS), in collaboration with the Institute of Mathematical Sciences of the Americas, awarded Assoc. Prof. Elitza Hristova, Assoc. Prof. Krasimira Ivanova and Assoc. Prof. Stela Bancheva-Zhelezova. The awards were announced at an official ceremony by the Director of the Fellowship Programme Prof. Mina Teicher.

Elitza Hristova is an associate professor at the Algebra and Logic department of the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (IMI-BAS). She defended her PhD at Jacobs University Bremen, Germany in 2013. Krasimira Ivanova is an associate professor at the Software Engineering and Information Systems department of IMI, BAS. She is head of the department and scientific secretary of the institute. She received her PhD from Hasselt University, Belgium in 2011. Stela Bancheva-Zhelezova is an associate professor at the Mathematical Foundations of Informatics department of IMI, BAS. She defended her PhD at the institute in 2010.

The fellowships include a ten-day visit to the Institute of Mathematical Sciences of the Americas at the University of Miami, as well as participation in an optional initiative of the center.

The director of the Institute of Mathematical Sciences of the Americas at the University of Miami Prof. Stephen Cantrell and the Director of Emmy Noether Institute in Israel Prof. Mina Teicher gave lectures on 30 June in “Prof. Marin Drinov” Hall of BAS.  In the lecture “A Journey from Math to Biology and Back Again … and Again”, Prof. Cantrell spoke about the interaction between mathematics and biology, and Prof. Teicher focused on the relationship of mathematics with beauty – “The mathematics of beauty”.

The world-famous mathematicians were on an official visit to the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences at the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics of BAS. The main purpose of the visit was to discuss new projects and deepen cooperation.
