Ninety years since the birth of acad. Blagovest Sendov will celebrate BAS on 8 February. The event in memory of Acad. Sendov will be held in “Prof. Marin Drinov” Hall at 11:00 and will be broadcast online on the website of BAS.

Academicians Kiril Boyanov and Oleg Mushkarov will talk about his contributions to the field of mathematics and share memories of their joint work at the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics and the Institute of Information and Communication Technologies of BAS. The President of BAS Prof. Julian Revalski, Full Member of the Academy, will open the event.

Acad. Blagovest Sendov is a world-famous Bulgarian mathematician, prominent statesman and public figure. He was the youngest doctor of sciences, the youngest professor and the youngest rector of Sofia University. He was Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics at Sofia University, Rector of Sofia University, President of BAS, President of the 37th National Assembly, Ambassador of Bulgaria to Japan, as well as a member of a number of foreign academies.

Acad. Sendov is a pioneer in a number of innovations in the field of education. In the 1970s, Acad. Sendov introduced the three-cycle education (Bachelor, Master and Candidate of sciences – now PhD) at the Faculty of Mathematics of Sofia University, which is now widespread in all universities. In the 1980s, the Problem Solving Group in Education which he created proposed new methods of teaching in schools, based also on the emerging modern technologies.

The scientific interests and achievements of Acad. Sendov are in the field of approximation theory, mathematical modelling (in particular in mathematical biology), numerical methods and computer science, as well as in the field of “Hausdorff approximations” which he initiated. Acad. Blagovest Sendov established a world-renowned Bulgarian school in these fields.

In the period 1988-1991, Academician Sendov was the President of BAS. During the event, photographs of his tenure will be shown from the collection of the Scientific Archives of BAS. An exhibition of books from the personal library of Acad. Sendov will be shown by the Central Library of BAS. In 1992, the Central Library received his personal library as a donation. The collection numbers 570 titles of books and over 100 periodicals. The library’s collection also contains over 80 titles of books and articles by Acad. Blagovest Sendov and 14 co-authored titles.

The Institute of Mathematics and Informatics will celebrate the 90th anniversary of the birth of Acad. Sendov with a lecture of Prof. Edward Saff from Vanderbilt University, USA, entitled Sampling with Minimal Energy: A talk in commemoration of B. Sendov’s 90th birth date.

This lecture is part of the Consortium Distinguished Lecture series jointly organized by the Institute of the Mathematical Sciences of the Americas at the University of Miami and the International Center for Mathematical Sciences – Sofia, whose first director was Acad. Sendov.

The event will take place online via zoom on 9 February 2022 at 18:00.
