Academician Georgi Bliznakov (1920-2004) is an eminent Bulgarian chemist of the 20th century, a world-renowned scientist in the field of molecular kinetic theory, crystal growth, adsorption and catalysis, high-temperature inorganic synthesis. As a brilliant organizer and leader over the years he held a number of responsible positions: longtime head of the Department of General and Inorganic Chemistry (1960-1989) at the Faculty of Chemistry of Sofia University, founder and longtime director of the Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry at BAS (1961-1990), Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry, Rector of Sofia University (1981–1985), Scientific Secretary-General and Vice-President of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
